Iowa Poll Results on Abortion Rights are Bad news for Iowa Republicans

3 in 5 Iowans Oppose Republican’s Extreme Six-Week Abortion Ban

DES MOINES – 3 in 5 Iowans oppose Republican’s extreme six-week abortion ban, according to the results of today’s Mediacom/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll, spelling bad news for Iowa Republicans.

Despite Iowans’ opposition to extreme abortion bans and without the support of any Democrats serving in the Iowa legislature, Kim Reynolds and legislative Republicans passed legislation that banned abortion at six weeks (before some women even know that they are pregnant).

Iowa House Republicans went even further in 2024,  passing an Albama-style “personhood” bill that endangers access to birth control and fertility treatments like IVF. The Iowa Senate passed the exact same bill in 2019, only slowing the bill this year under national political pressure.

Republicans serving Iowans in Congress also have an extensive history voting against abortion rights. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Ashley Hinson and Randy Feenstra sponsored a bill that would have banned all abortions with no exceptions.

Zach Nunn raised his hand during a debate in 2022 indicating his support for a total abortion ban.

Just this week, Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley voted against a bill ensuring a right to IVF treatments and prosecutions against Alabama-style bans.

Extreme abortion bans have already been linked to the death of two women in Georgia after they were denied treatment.

“Iowans have the ability to restore their rights by voting for Democrats up and down the ballot this November,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Iowa Democrats trust women and families to make their own health care decisions and are listening to the majority of Iowans who believe this six-week abortion ban is too extreme.”
