Iowa Democratic Party Statement on Women’s Equality Day

DES MOINESIowa Democratic Party Vice-Chair June Owens released the following statement on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment:

“One hundred years ago today, after decades of struggle and sacrifice from activists, the 19th Amendment was ratified and American women gained the right to vote. This victory did not come easily: women marched and organized, were met with violent resistance, and many were arrested. But because of their persistence, our country made a massive leap towards equality at the ballot box.

“However, this hard-earned victory did not apply equally to all women. Women of color continue to face voter suppression tactics that limit their access to making their voice heard at the polls. While we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, we also must remember the women that were left behind a century ago and reaffirm our commitment to fighting for women of all backgrounds.

“On this Women’s Equality Day, we can honor the progress our country has made while reaffirming our commitment to fighting the battles not yet won. That’s why Iowa Democrats are working tirelessly towards securing family and medical leave and access to affordable child care, protecting reproductive health services, and ensuring equal pay for equal work.

“Unfortunately, President Trump and Republicans at every level of government have continuously attacked women’s health care and economic stability. We cannot afford another four years of Trump’s anti-women agenda. To honor Women’s Equality Day this year, Iowa Democrats are committing to voting in record numbers and sending Theresa Greenfield and Rita Hart to Washington alongside Congresswomen Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne. We’re committed to electing the first female Vice President Kamala Harris — and advocates for women like Joe Biden — in November.”
