Iowa Democratic Party Statement on Iowa Surpassing 50,000 Coronavirus Cases

DES MOINESIowa Democratic Party Chair Mark Smith released the following statement on Iowa surpassing 50,000 COVID-19 cases:

“As of today, 50,000 Iowans have contracted COVID-19 and even more tragically, over 950 have died. Governor Reynolds and President Trump have completely failed at containing the pandemic and helping struggling Iowans, and as a result, tens of thousands of people are suffering. This devastating news comes on the same day that Mike Pence is visiting Iowa to tout Trump’s agenda while still refusing to provide any answers or solutions for hurting Iowans.

“The coronavirus pandemic did not have to be this bad. This was entirely preventable, but Reynolds and Trump have denied responsibility and aid at every turn and left Iowans behind. Still, there is no plan to confront the ongoing crisis from either the White House or the governor’s mansion. Iowans and Americans across the country deserve better from their leaders.

“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will rely on science and public health experts to guide their coronavirus response, including in developing a vaccine. It’s clear from the 50,000 coronavirus cases in our state that we need leaders who put politics aside to protect the health and safety of Iowans, and that’s exactly what Joe and Kamala will do as our next President and Vice President.”
