DES MOINES — This evening, Democrats from Senate District 41 held a nominating convention for the special election on Jan. 26. Iowa Democratic Party Chair Mark Smith released the following statement in response to Mary Stewart’s nomination as the Democratic candidate for the SD-41 special election:

“Today, Senate District 41 Democrats nominated Mary Stewart as the candidate for the upcoming special election. Mary is a life-long educator and proven fighter for Iowans, and there is no one better to represent working families in the district. Mary will work to bring meaningful pandemic relief to Iowans, invest in teachers and public schools, and grow our local economies by investing in workers.

“Now, with 19 days until the election, Iowa Dems are mobilized and organizing to turnout voters and flip SD-41. I want to extend my gratitude to Steve Siegel for running for this position to serve our state, and I look forward to working with him to send Mary Stewart to the Capitol. Iowans need State Senators who will create equal opportunities for all Iowans, unlike the current majority occupants who serve party over people by clinging to a divisive, ideological agenda that undermines our democracy. Iowa Democrats will always lead with our values, and this election is the first step on the road to bringing new leadership to our state.”
