ICYMI: Miller-Meeks Doubles Down On Her Attacks to Medicare, Social Security

During last night’s IA-02 debate, Miller-Meeks reiterated her support for raising the age of retirement, denying seniors Medicare and Social Security benefits

DES MOINES — The 2nd congressional district debate last night made it clear: Iowa seniors can’t trust State Sen. Mariannette Miller-Meeks to protect their health and retirement security. While Miller-Meeks repeatedly dodged questions around health care — and refused to denounce the GOP’s partisan lawsuit to overturn the ACA — she doubled down on her support for raising the retirement age and denying earned benefits to seniors.

Here’s what else you need to know about Miller-Meeks anti-senior and anti-worker agenda:

  • In 2008, Miller-Meeks supported raising the federal retirement age, forcing Iowans to work longer before they can receive their hard-earned retirement benefits.

  • The health care plan Miller-Meeks supports would allow insurance companies to charge an “age tax,” on older Americans, forcing them to pay higher premiums.

  • As if raising the retirement age wasn’t enough, in 2012 Miller-Meeks also supported turning Medicare into a voucher program that would put limits on the program’s essential guaranteed coverage. This dangerous plan would leave Iowa seniors without care and raise the cost of health care, including prescription drugs.

  • It’s no surprise that given her attacks on Medicare, that in 2008, Mariannette supported privatizing Social Security — a move that would roll back the promise our government made to seniors who have paid into the system.

“Throughout State Sen. Miller-Meeks’ political career, she has consistently advocated for breaking the promises made to Iowa’s seniors and workers instead of looking for real solutions to strengthen Social Security and Medicare,” said IDP spokesperson Samantha Kennedy. “Last night, Miller-Meeks doubled down on her extreme anti-worker plans that leave seniors behind, once again making it clear that she can’t be trusted to be a reliable advocate for them in Congress.”
