Today, Iowans gathered with Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price and State Auditor Candidate Rob Sand to send a clear message to Vice President Pence, Governor Kim Reynolds, and Congressman David Young: if you don’t fight for us, we won’t vote for you.

Aided by Congressman David Young and Governor Kim Reynolds, Vice President Mike Pence and the Trump Administration have run roughshod over working families in Iowa. Their budget busting tax scam added $1.9 trillion to the deficit, and is ripping money away from our schools and threatening Iowans’ hard earned Social Security benefits. All while nearly two-thirds of Americans say they have not seen any increase in their take-home pay.

Now, because of this tax scam, D.C. Republicans are threatening Medicare and Social Security.

Simultaneously, the Republicans’ politically-motivated attacks on the Affordable Care Act weakened protections for Iowans with pre-existing conditions and did nothing to fix the real problems like the rising cost of prescription drug prices and junk insurance plans. Iowans are also dealing with Governor Reynolds disastrous privatization of Medicaid experiment which has denied or reduced services for over 40,000 Iowans and continues to cost taxpayers far more than was promised.

“Time and again we have seen the Republicans’ inability to lead. Whether it’s the lack of protection for those who need health care, whether it’s tax cuts to benefit the wealthy or budget mismanagement on all levels, these elected officials have shown that they cannot be trusted to lead,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price.

“For the last two years, we’ve watched elected leaders throughout the state and throughout the country govern under a false claim of fiscal responsibility, only to gut ordinary government services like public safety that would actually be wise investments,” said State Auditor Candidate Rob Sand.

“One of the clearest examples we’ve seen of this is the Republican-led tax plan. With vocal support from Kim Reynolds, Mike Pence and David Young give massive new breaks to big corporations and more than 80% of the benefits to the top 1% of people. Nearly two thirds of Americans have not seen any increase in take home pay. Most importantly, this plan will add $1.9 trillion to the deficit with no plan to pay it back…It is critical now more than ever that we have a government that is held accountable to the people.”
