Congressman David Young? A champion of bipartisanship? That’s what the Congressman would like Iowans to believe, but his record tells a story of strict partisanship. Whether it’s voting for health care and tax bills that go against the best interest of Iowans or voting with the President ninety-nine percent of the time, more than the “most conservative human being” Steve King, Congressman David Young consistently puts party ahead of people.
  • David Young voted for the AHCA (after saying he wouldn’t), the bill Republicans tried to ram through Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The AHCA was a disastrous bill for Iowa families. Not only would it have increased health care costs for millions of Iowans, but it also would have gutted coverage for essential health benefits and protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
**OF NOTE: Young claims he wants to protect people with pre-existing conditions now that it’s politically expedient for him, but the AHCA included an amendment that allowed health insurance companies to charge people with pre-existing condition more.
  • In 2017, Young fell in line with his party and voted for the GOP tax bill that gave tax cuts to wealthiest Americans, while hurting the middle class and threatening crucial programs like Medicare and Social Security. Young claimed that the tax bill would be good for Iowans, especially by getting rid of the estate tax. However, a Des Moines Register report showed that getting rid of the estate tax would only affect 32 out of nearly 1.5 million Iowans. David Young voted for the bill despite knowing that it would hurt hardworking Iowan families.
  • Finally, despite being elected to represent Iowa’s third district, David Young seems to have a constituency of one: Donald Trump. David Young has voted in line with the President nearly 99% of the time in the past 22 months. That’s even more than Steve King, who Trump called the “most conservative human being” at a rally in Council Bluffs on Tuesday.
“Congressman Young can say he’s all about bipartisanship all he wants, but his record shows that’s just not the case,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price.

“The facts are clear: David Young is too extreme for the third district and too extreme for Iowa. It’s time for new leaders in Congress who have the skills and values necessary to reach across the aisle, leaders like Cindy Axne.”

In another show of Young’s spineless partisanship, he joined Trump on stage this week as Trump continued racist attacks against a U.S. Senator, said Democrats were the party of crime, and openly mocked and degraded his fellow citizens for being Democrats.
