Donald Trump Jr. Can’t Cover Up the Economic Consequences of Trump’s Failed Coronavirus Response

DES MOINESIowa Democratic Party Chair Mark Smith released the following statement ahead of Donald Trump Jr.’s campaign event in Treynor, IA:

“It’s not surprising that the Trump campaign and Iowa GOP are putting politics before public health, but it’s an affront to frontline workers and public health professionals who are risking their lives to stop the growing virus spread in our state. This reckless event — without masks or visibly recommended public safety guidelines — puts lives in danger and could further strain Iowa’s public health and local economies. President Trump lied to the American public about the severity of coronavirus and failed to contain the pandemic that has left 76,000 Iowans out-of-work more than six months into the pandemic.

“As Trump refuses to answer the most basic questions about why he lied to Iowans about the COVID-19 crisis, it’s clearer than ever that only Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have the integrity and real plans to defeat the virus and build our country back better.”

Here’s a look at some of the ways Trump’s ineffective pandemic response is affecting Iowans:

  • Under Trump’s leadership, Iowa has surpassed 74,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and over 1,200 deaths, making it a worldwide hotspot.

  • Hospitalizations due to coronavirus are at a three-month high right now in Iowa — proving the pandemic is far from over.

  • More than 76,000 Iowans are still out-of-work over six months since the COVID-19 crisis began.

  • Last month’s jobs report showed that across the country, companies are making permanent job cuts instead of temporary furloughs as the pandemic rages on.
