Hinson Refuses to Denounce Republican ACA Lawsuit to Rip Health Care Away from Millions

During a global pandemic where Iowans need health care more than ever, Hinson supports a GOP-backed lawsuit to repeal the ACA

While Hinson is desperate to avoid talking about the Trump-backed lawsuit, Congresswoman Finkenauer continues fighting to lower the cost of prescription drugs and expand access to care for all Iowans

DES MOINES — State Rep. Ashley Hinson’s silent support for the Republican-backed lawsuit to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act speaks volumes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while unemployment claims are hitting new record highs by the day, this lawsuit would devastate the most vulnerable Iowan families already struggling to afford the prescriptions and care they need.

Despite Hinson’s shameless claims to support “affordable, accessible health care,” she has refused to denounce her party’s desperate and extreme attempts to end coverage protections for Iowans with pre-existing conditions and gut Medicaid.

Here’s a look at the devastating impact the GOP lawsuit would have if successful, by the numbers:

  • 227,000: The number of Iowans who would lose the health coverage they currently have.
  • $268 million: How much Iowans have saved on prescription drug costs under the ACA that they would now have to pay out-of-pocket.

While Hinson refuses to take questions or explain her support for the lawsuit to Iowans, Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer hosted her fifth telephone town hall of 2020 this week to address threats to the ACA and hear stories from Iowans struggling to access insurance and afford prescription drugs.

Finkenauer also helped pass the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Enhancement Act last month, which lowers health insurance costs, allows negotiations for lower prescription drug prices, and encourages states to expand Medicaid coverage. The package also includes Finkenauer’s bipartisan bill to permanently fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

“State Rep. Ashley Hinson’s refusal to explain her support for taking health care coverage away from Iowans during a global pandemic proves she’s running to be just another rubber stamp for the Republican establishment,” said Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson Samantha Kennedy. “Protecting our national health care system is a life-or-death issue, and Hinson’s silence shows she would rather appease Republican leaders in Washington and Big Pharma corporate donors than fight for millions of Iowans.”
