Des Moines–In response to the Inauguration of the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, Iowa Democratic Party, Dr. Andy McGuire issued the following statement:

“President Obama will officially leave the oval office today with a legacy of economic prosperity, inclusiveness and a strong record on national security. We thank him for his service and the dignity with which he has served. We wish the Obama family the best as they make the transition into private life.

“When Donald Trump becomes the nation’s 45th President, we hope that he will recognize and respect the significance and history of the office and govern with grace and with the nation’s best interests at heart. As Americans, we proudly wish our country to progress and prosper.

“It is our hope that Donald Trump and fellow Republican leaders will not use their governing powers to deepen the cultural divide or widen the growing income inequality gap. Donald Trump lost the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. He does not have a mandate to implement extreme policies or compromise the delicate balance of foreign relations. As President, it is important that he listens to all Americans, not just those who agree with him.”
