DES MOINES – Today, in Iowa and across the nation, businesses will close and thousands will march in support of a Day Without Immigrants. In response to this day of action that recognizes the significance of immigrants’ valuable contributions to our country, Iowa Democratic Party Latino/a Caucus Chair, Brenda Phongsavanh issued the following statement:

“Iowa has a rich history of welcoming immigrants and refugees fleeing from poverty and life-threatening situations. The Latino/a Caucus stands in solidarity with protesters, students and activists and their strike to highlight the significant contributions of immigrants to our a society. Immigrants are the foundation of our nation’s history. American culture is an amalgamation of diverse ethnicities and global influences. We should celebrate that culture and embrace everyone coming to our country in search of a better life.

“In just a few weeks, Donald Trump has proven to be one of the most un-American presidents in modern history. The President’s unconstitutional immigration ban sent shockwaves around the world. His actions disrupted travel, separated families and prevented people from receiving much needed medical care. We reject the extreme and dangerous views on immigration that are alienating our neighbors and our communities. We simply won’t allow our children to group up in a country with leaders who shout angry commands. Today, we stand with all immigrants in protest of the hateful policies of President Trump, Congressman Steve King and all Republican lawmakers who reject and disrespect the value of diversity.
