In the wake of the holiday weekend release of the State Senate’s sexual harassment report release, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price released the following statement:

“Shame on Senator Dix for covering up an unsafe working environment funded by Iowa taxpayers and shame on Governor Reynolds for putting partisan loyalty ahead of accountability. The release of this report, and the circumstances around it, only further prove that Senator Dix is unfit for his office and Governor Reynolds would rather protect her political cronies than stand up for what’s right. Senator Dix must step down, and Governor Reynolds needs to step up. Iowans deserve better.”

Today, the Bureau of Economic Analysis released the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth numbers for each state and found that Iowa’s GDP shrank by 0.7% in the second quarter, the worst growth numbers in the nation.

This is particularly bad news in light of the Reynolds Budget Crisis, which was caused by special interest handouts that clearly failed to boost Iowa’s economy and resulted in cuts to vital services that attract and keep businesses in the state.

“With Iowa’s economic growth sliding backwards, it is clear that Governor Reynolds’ special interest giveaways are not helping our state. We should be investing in the people of Iowa, not out-of-state multi-billion dollar corporations who have said they don’t even need our money,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price. “Governor Reynolds and her Republican Party’s economic policies have failed us, it’s time for new leadership.”

In the wake of yet another announcement from Senator Dix in regards to his largely secret and partisan plan to deal with sexual harassment in the State Capitol, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price released the following statement:

“Today’s announcement is yet another example of why Senator Bill Dix cannot be trusted as the leader of the State Senate and should resign. The unacceptable secrecy and pattern of mistakes make it clear that we cannot trust Senator Dix to make the Capitol a safe working environment or manage our tax dollars. He needs to go.”

As the state prepares for budget hearings, the Iowa Democratic Party reminds Iowans about their site ReynoldsBudgetCrisis.org, a resource to get the facts about Kim Reynolds’ budgetary mismanagement and misplaced priorities.

“Make no mistake, the Reynolds Budget Crisis is not just bad luck or, as Governor Reynolds says, a slow farm economy. It is the result of specific policy decisions made and promoted by Governor Reynolds to benefit wealthy businesses and special interests, and now, as we’ll see in the hearings today, Iowans are paying the price,” said Iowa Democratic Party Spokesperson Tess Seger.

As these hearings proceed, it is also important to note that Governor Reynolds’ decision to borrow $13 million from Iowa’s reserves to close out FY 17 is still under legal question.
