Almost 400 people came out to the state capitol in Des Moines in support of the President’s health insurance reform plan.
Jan Bauer, an Organizing for America volunteer from Ames spoke to the crowd and told them some of the stories she’s heard as she knocked on doors in her community. She introduced Mitch Stewart, the Executive Director of Organizing for America. It was somewhat of a homecoming for him since he directed the Obama for America field campaign here in Iowa for the 2008 caucus.
After Stewart, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller took to the podium. He spoke forcefully of the need for people to get involved, for people to realize that support is out there and that events like this and all of the work that OFA has been doing this summer is the real story on health care, not the arguing and yelling we’ve seen on cable news. We have documents on exactly what the President is proposing available here on our website.
He also spoke about how we elected President Obama to do the hard things, not the easy things, and that this is when he needs our help the most. Just like when we knocked on doors for him during the election, he needs that same level of hard work and support. We need to push back against the rumors and false statements standing in the way of real reform and helping millions of lives. You can sign up to volunteer with OFA here.
It was a great event and OfA posted some pictures on their Flickr page:
